S.O.B.E.R. Pt.2

stay vigilant

Be sober and vigilant

If you recall from S.O.B.E.R. Pt.1, we assigned three words to each letter from the word sober.  In this post, S.O.B.E.R. Pt.2, we’ll start with the first letter, “S”.  While other words could have been used instead, or added, here are the three that we settled on for the first letter of the word:

S – seek, set, serve

Remember, the purpose is to look at things in our Christian lives that will help us walk soberly before our God.  Here is a breakdown of the verses that we covered in the Winchester Bible Study:

Seek

Deuteronomy 4:29-31 we shall find Him if we seek with all of our hearts

1 Chronicles 16:11-15 seek The Lord and His strength

Psalm 27:8 – seek ye my face, thy face Lord will I seek

Isaiah 55:6-7 seek The Lord while he may be found

Hosea 10:12 seek him while he may be found

The focus for Seek was seeking after Jesus with all of our hearts.  We can’t hold anything back in our pursuit of God.  Pursuit that is 99% isn’t good enough.  I so love verse 8 in Psalm 27; when the Lord says “seek My face”; the believers heart leaps within them and responds “Your face, Lord, will I seek!”

seek God with all your heart

Seek Him with ALL your heart

Set

Isaiah 50:7 Your face like a flint

Colossians 3:1-3 Your affections on things above

Matthew 6:19-21  lay up treasures in heaven, where your treasure is, there your heart is also

Set, talking about determination and resolve, is a very important aspect of us walking in sobriety.  Additionally, making sure that our affections are set on things above and not on things of the Earth helps us keep proper perspective.  Our treasures need to be heavenly treasures so that we don’t allow the cares of this world, the deceitfulness of riches and the lusts of other things to come in and choke the Word of God out of us.  Where our treasure is, our hearts are sure to be there also.

set your affection

Heavenly treasures!

Serve

John 12:26 he that serves me, follows me

Galatians 5:13-14 by love serve one another

In the Serve point, we discussed two aspects.  The first was service to God.  If we serve God, we follow the example of Jesus, plain and simple.  We must walk as He walked.  Service to God is far more about heart attitude than actual performance of the work.  The “why” is more important than the “what”.  Let me say it another way, our heart motive driving why we do the work is far more critical in God’s eyes than the actual task.  He has works for us that He has fore ordained us to do, but He wants it done out of a heart of love and relationship towards Him.  Otherwise, we are caught up in a religious act that is no better than the Pharisees in their hypocrisy.  The second aspect was service to one another.  By love serve one another.  There should be no ulterior motives, vaunting of ourselves, spiritual or selfish ambition in our service to one another.  We don’t do it to be seen or applauded, but we serve one another by love.  Jesus Himself didn’t come to be served, but to serve.  1 John 5, verses 2 and 3, makes it very clear that we love one another by loving and obeying God.

by love serve

What a high calling!

Let our lives be poured out for God and His kingdom.  Let Him have more!  Lay aside the weights and the sins that are so easily besetting you.

In our next post, we’ll look at the letter “O”.  Until then, please go to Calvary Temple Winchester to read more blog posts, or go to Calvary Temple VA to find more teachings on this or other topics that may be of interest to you.
